Vivian Nguyen
Patrick White playwright nominee 2021
Vivian Nguyen is a Vietnamese Australian actress, writer and theatre maker based in Melbourne
She is a recent nominee for the Sydney Theatre Company Patrick White playwright award 2021.
Outside of everything she does, you would find her in a corner surrounded by stacks of books, making bread in her beloved Le Creuset or watching the latest episode of Ru Paul’s Drag Race. If you had told her younger self in high school that she had eyes set on an artistic career, young Vivian would burst into tears and then to laughter at even the slightest prospect of an arts career. As her father once told her, “Artists are successful once they die.”
Once riding on a career that was heading into the world of Pharmaceutical Science and money, she took a sharp U-Turn despite many cultural advices not to and gave the good old Acting a go. The chance she took definitely was worth it.
Vivian hopes to continue to make work that empowers young voices to take a stand, be heard and champion the future of our culture despite the stacking amounts of obstacles that resist them to do so.
To end this off, Vivian would like to acknowledge the Wurundjeri people who are the Traditional Custodians of the land we create on. She would also like to pay respect to the Elders both past and present of the Kulin Nation and extend that respect to other Indigenous Australians present.
Where we are and the history that precedes us informs how we work and how we move forward.
